Israeli secondary school students Ron Solan, Rina Sevostianov and Ofir Shmool won a silver and two bronze medals, respectively, at the 49th International Chemistry Olympiad in Thailand this month.
Ben Pilarski was the fourth member of the Israeli team.
The annual contest draws teams of four students from 76 countries to show off their chemistry knowledge and skills in a five-hour laboratory practical and five-hour written theoretical examination.
The Israeli delegation trains with Prof. Zeev Gross from the Schulich Faculty of Chemistry at the Technion, as well as with their teachers at their individual high schools.
Solan won a silver medal at last year’s Olympiad and a bronze at the year before. He won a gold medal at April’s 51st International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad. Sevostianov also brought home a bronze medal from the International Olympiad in 2016. Shmool won bronze at the Mendeleev contest this year.
