HBO has announced it is working on a 10-episode television series based on the tragic kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in 2014. The American premium cable channel will co-produce the TV drama with Israeli production company, Keshet International.

The series is based on the true story of the kidnapping and search for Gil-ad Shaar, 16, Eyal Yifrach, 19, and Naftali Fraenkel, 16, who were murdered by Hamas terrorists in 2014.

The plot is said to focus on an idealistic investigator for Israel’s secret service, the Shin Bet. “A new command position thrusts him into a confrontation that undermines his faith and worldview, leading to a dramatic conflict between his values and the actions of those closest to him,” according to a statement.

Israeli scriptwriters Hagai Levi (The Affair, In Treatment) and Noah Stollman have been tasked with writing the scripted series while filmmaker Joseph Cedar will be the primary director, according to reports.

The series will be produced by HBO’s former head Michael Lombardo.

“We’re excited to work with Keshet and this extremely talented and creative group led by Hagai Levi. We look forward to sharing this important story with our subscribers,” said HBO president Casey Bloys.

“We are thrilled to partner with HBO, the ultimate quality TV powerhouse,” said Avi Nir, CEO of the Keshet Media Group.
